What is Sleep?

There are 5 stages to sleep - One of the stages you may recognise which is where we drop off into a deep sleep and is temporarily restorative. The purpose of this is thought to be able to help us survive should we need to escape danger. It wouldn’t sustain us for long however. Many of us drop off to sleep on the sofa and feel refreshed only to not be able to fall back to sleep when we get into bed. Up to 40% of people suffer from sleep deprivation which has a knock on effect on road safety and feeling of well being.

One of the other stages is REM sleep ‘rapid eye movement’ is discussed in the hypnotherapy initial consultation to help clients understand the benefits of sleep and relates to the trance .

We can think negatively or ‘negatively forecast’ as a result of our perceptions around our circumstances e.g someone has annoyed us, we are worried about something we’ve said or just random negative self talk. REM sleep turns these emotional thoughts into a narrative memory so stops us feeling worried or upset about something we don’t need to. We do this by dreaming either a clear scenario or metaphorically; We’ve all said ‘I had the weirdest dream last night..’. If you have pets you will recognise this stage as it’s when they twitch or look like they are running.

The amount of REM sleep is restricted and our brain needs more it wakes us up and we find ourselves wide awake and unable to get back to sleep. This is where hypnotherapy for sleep problems can really help.

Can hypnotherapy help with sleep problems?

This is called the miracle question. We then look at small changes or priorities for the following week-they may be seemingly unrelated but you will have decided

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy for sleep

Solution-focused hypnotherapy works by focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. This approach helps clients identify and focus on emptying their ‘stress buckets’ by addressing thoughts around issues that cause unscheduled wakefulness. Using a solution focused talking therapy, trance with positive suggestions, clients can access the subconscious mind to reduce unhelpful thoughts, anxiety and stress that may contribute to insomnia or other sleep disturbances. Solution-focused hypnotherapy encourages individuals to envision their desired sleep outcomes, empowering them to make practical changes in their routines and behaviours to achieve those goals.
